5 ½ Cups SPAR Bread or Cake Flour
5 ½ Tsp SPAR Baking Powder
5 Tbs SPAR White or Brown Sugar
2 Tsp salt
2 Cups cold water
2 Tbs of SPAR Butter
SPAR Sunflower Oil for frying
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Mix well. Create a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and add cold water. Mix well until all the flour is moistened. Use your hands to knead the dough. Add the butter to the dough and continue kneading until it becomes soft and playable.
If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle about a tablespoon of flour on the sides and continue kneading. Once the dough has reached the desired consistency, portion it into balls and place them in the hot oil. Fry the dough for three to four minutes on each side, ensuring that the heat is set to medium-low.
This will prevent the outside from browning too quickly while ensuring the inside is cooked through. After four minutes, flip the dough and fry the other side for an additional four minutes.
Remove from the pan and place it on a cooling rack to allow the excess oil to drain. Serve the Magwinya Fat Cakes with tea, coffee, or soup.
