SPAR Botswana believes strongly in making a difference to the communities in which we operate. SPAR especially likes supporting initiatives which involve our direct communities, as well as initiatives which are sure to have a far-reaching effect. These organisations are making a tangible difference in the lives of others, while at the same time enriching the lives of the members of our communities.
Recently, SPAR Botswana and our stores across the country showed support to the following remarkable organisations:
Journey of Hope
The Gabarone City Council and Journey of Hope got together to raise funds through a fun run. SPAR Botswana played our part by sponsoring the Finish Line with boerewors rolls and music entertainment.
Boiteko Community Garden
Four years ago, SPAR created this garden for the 10 disabled persons living at Boiteko. When they recently needed a shed to keep tools safely stored in, two new toilets and an office for their social worker to be built, Nswazwi SPAR stepped in to help. All the buildings have been completed and to help them even more, all surplus vegetables from the garden are sold to SPAR.
Bana Ba Letsatsi
Bana Ba Letsatsi operates a rehabilitation centre that offers a place of safety for orphans and vulnerable children. They provide on-going support in the form of counselling, education, skills training, daily meals, sports, clothes, transport, medical attention, hygiene facilities and other services. Delta SPAR constructed a chicken coop to promote egg laying and chickens to be used in the Rehabilitation Centre for the children. 25 chickens were bought for the project and SPAR continues to support the project with chicken feed. Bana Ba Letsatsi intends to grow this project to a large scale once they are allocated a larger piece of land.
House of Hope Trust
House of Hope Trust is a non-profit, NGO that works with orphaned and vulnerable children in Palapye, providing integrated early childhood education and psychosocial support. They rely on the support of donors and the community for the delivery of their services. Bamangwato SPAR came to their aid to help them to reseal and fix a leak in their roof, repair a broken ceiling, paint the kitchen, replace broken toilet seats, install shade at the school playground and making lockers for kids.
Shamwari’s Of Christiaan Golf Day
Christiaan Van Wyk was stabbed brutally in the back of the neck in Maun and spent several months recovering in hospital resulting in medical expenses for his rehabilitation that piled up. A Golf Day was arranged to raise funds for his treatment. SPAR Botswana reached out and asked sponsors throughout the business community to get involved to raise money for rehabilitation costs for Christiaan. The Tsetseng Retail Group donated P25,000 including platters, staff and branding and raised a total raised over P350,000 to help pay for Christaan’s medical bills.
Nomad’s Golf Day
Nomads Golf was started to encourage and promote, foster and support the game of golf and in particular to provide a source of service as may be used for the benefit of golf in Southern Africa. To also generate funds which may be distributed in the furtherance of golf and to such charitable causes as the Members of Nomads may deem proper. SPAR Botswana has become an on-going sponsor of Nomads Golf.
